After setting up Gmail using the Gmail setup Wizard on my 3G iPhone, I found that there was no way to customize the 'From' address so that I could use my company domain. For web based Gmail you can set a different 'From' address (e.g. your personal or company domain or other webmail service). It is possible though. Here's how:
- If you have already set up Gmail using the wizard, delete that account. You don't need it and I found that following the process below without deleting the account also updated the existing account settings so I was left with two accounts with the same info and I couldn't use a customized from address in either. I could no longer send email.
- Set up a new email account from Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Add Account... -> Other
- Enter your name, the email address you want to use and your Gmail password. I used an email address that I had already verified in Gmail. I assume this step
- On the next screen, IMAP should be selected by default. Use imap.gmail.com for the Incoming Mail Server settings, along with your full Gmail email address and password. For the outgoing mail server I used smtp.gmail.com and again added my Gmail address and password, although I'm not sure if that was necessary.
That's it. You should now be able to send mails and make them look like they come from an address other than your Gmail one. I haven't yet tried setting up multiple accounts, so if anyone has experience with this, please post in the comments.
